Author biography

A Vietnam-born traveler writing from lived experience and careful research

I was born and raised in central Vietnam. Travel entered my life early because my parents loved taking our family on short trips around the country: Ho Chi Minh City, Nha Trang, Da Lat, Hanoi, and the places between them. Those trips opened my world. They taught me that a destination is not only a landmark; it is food, family rhythm, language, bargaining, weather, roads, and the small kindnesses that make a place feel human.

During university in Vietnam, I traveled domestically with friends on old Honda motorbikes. With scholarships and savings, we also visited nearby countries such as Thailand and Indonesia. In my final year, I interned with Viettel Post in Cambodia and spent three months there, traveling from Phnom Penh to Angkor Wat and Koh Rong. After my family moved to the United States, the first years were hard, but that hard work improved my English dramatically and pushed me deeper into writing. I took online writing courses, joined writing competitions, and earned certificates while learning how to turn experience into useful words.

I later took a corporate job in the United States, but after two years I felt lost. The daily 9-5 life was not built for me as an adventurer, so I resigned after a promotion and backpacked for six months. I set a personal goal to visit the Seven Wonders of the World. I flew one way to Peru first, traveled there for three weeks, used Peru Hop, and fell in love with the country. Peru sharpened my backpacking skills: street bargaining, choosing affordable restaurants and hotels, reading transport situations, and avoiding unnecessary trouble.

From there I traveled through more than 20 countries, including Brazil for Christ the Redeemer, Bolivia for the Uyuni Salt Flat, Italy for the Colosseum, Jordan for Petra, India for the Taj Mahal, and China for the Great Wall. Those experiences changed my perspective and my attitude toward the world. Joy Nguyen Writes is my way to pay forward the help I received along the road: no promotion, no sales, no affiliate links, just practical travel writing shared in good faith.

Why this travel advice is different

Built from lived Vietnam context, global backpacking, and source checks.

My writing starts with the questions travelers actually ask: how long to stay, what to book early, where routes get confusing, how local expectations differ, and which details make a trip smoother and more meaningful. Vietnam is my foundation; research and global travel experience sharpen the advice.

Route expertise

From Hanoi to Hoi An, Da Lat to the Mekong, the details matter.

The best Vietnam travel content respects the small decisions that shape a trip: regional weather, motorbike routes, domestic flights, train timing, local food, bargaining, safety, culture, and budget. My Peru and global backpacking work adds a wider travel lens, but Vietnam remains the place I know from the inside.

Editorial method

How I evaluate travel advice before publishing

  1. Start with the traveler problem. Advice begins with a real planning question: route, budget, safety, timing, transport, or experience.
  2. Compare against on-the-ground patterns. I look for what travelers repeatedly need to know, then test it against lived Vietnam context, backpacking judgment, and current source checks.
  3. Separate facts from judgment. Dates, routes, prices, and official rules should be sourced; first-hand experience and recommendations should explain their logic.
  4. Update when conditions change. Travel content should carry a visible review date because transport, access, prices, and safety guidance change.
